ROCK 'N' ROLL BON MOTS #013
How can Sam Cooke sing a song called "Havin' a Party" and still sound so sad? I don't think I'm just reading into it; when he gets to the end and delivers the line I'm havin' such a good time dancin' with my baby it just sounds like he's ready to cry. More importantly, maybe, given the lyrics, why hasn't this been covered in an actual, you know, party style by someone? (It has been covered by the Afghan Whigs, but much as I love Dulli, that doesn't really count.) I mean: "So Mr., Mr. DJ / Keep those records playin'"? Doesn't get more old-skool than that.
